Shopify’s advertised monthly price is only the starting point of what a Sri Lankan business actually pays to run a store. The real number depends on five layers stacked together, the plan itself, Shopify’s additional fee for using a third party payment provider, the payment gateway’s own processing fee, apps and theme costs, and the design and development work needed to set everything up properly.
That second layer matters more in Sri Lanka than in most markets, since Shopify Payments is not currently available here, which means every Sri Lankan store pays an extra fee layer that stores in supported countries simply don’t. This guide breaks down every plan in USD and LKR, shows the actual break even math between plans, and gives a full formula for estimating your real monthly cost.
As a certified Shopify Partner in Sri Lanka, Accel Asia builds and configures Shopify stores for a living, so this guide also reflects where Sri Lankan sellers most commonly overpay or choose the wrong tier for their stage.
The Short Answer
A Sri Lankan Shopify store’s monthly cost comes from five layers, the Shopify subscription, Shopify’s additional third party transaction fee, the payment gateway’s own processing fee, apps and theme costs, and development or maintenance work. For a new store on Basic processing modest sales, realistic all in monthly costs typically land somewhere between 12,000 and 30,000 LKR before transaction fees, with transaction fees scaling separately as sales grow.
Shopify Plans and Prices in 2026
Shopify currently lists five plans. Most Sri Lankan businesses only need to seriously consider three of them.
Starter costs 5 US Dollars a month, roughly 1,650 LKR, and only provides a checkout link rather than a full storefront, making it suited to social media sellers rather than a proper online store.
Basic costs 39 US Dollars a month, roughly 12,900 LKR, or 29 US Dollars a month on annual billing, roughly 9,600 LKR. This is the entry level plan for a full online store and is where most new Sri Lankan Shopify sellers start. It includes unlimited products, hosting, SSL, and 24/7 support, but carries the highest third party transaction fee.
Grow, previously called the Shopify plan, costs 105 US Dollars a month, roughly 34,700 LKR, or 79 US Dollars a month on annual billing, roughly 26,100 LKR. It adds multiple staff accounts, professional reporting, and a lower third party transaction fee than Basic.
Advanced costs 399 US Dollars a month, roughly 131,700 LKR, or 299 US Dollars a month on annual billing, roughly 98,700 LKR. It’s built for higher volume stores needing deeper reporting, automation, and the lowest third party transaction fee among the core plans.
Shopify Plus starts at around 2,300 US Dollars a month and is built for enterprise brands with complex requirements such as B2B features and larger teams, well beyond what most Sri Lankan businesses need when starting out.
All LKR figures use an approximate rate of 330 LKR to 1 USD, which fluctuates regularly, so always check the current rate against your actual billing.
The Real Reason Sri Lankan Shopify Costs Are Different
Shopify Payments, Shopify’s own built in payment processor, is not available to merchants in Sri Lanka. Where it is available, it lets a merchant avoid Shopify’s additional third party transaction fee entirely. Without access to it, every Sri Lankan store connects a third party gateway instead, typically PayHere, WEBXPAY, or PayPal, and pays two separate charges on every card transaction as a result.
The first charge is Shopify’s own additional fee for using a third party gateway rather than Shopify Payments, which is roughly 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, and 0.6 percent on Advanced. The second charge is the gateway provider’s own processing fee, which for PayHere typically runs in the 2.7 to 3.3 percent range depending on the plan selected. These two fees stack on top of each other, and it’s this stacked structure, rather than the subscription price alone, that most Sri Lankan sellers underestimate when budgeting.
Should You Upgrade From Basic to Grow? The Actual Math
Upgrading from Basic to Grow costs an extra 40 US Dollars a month on monthly billing, roughly 13,200 LKR, but reduces Shopify’s third party transaction fee from 2 percent to 1 percent, a 1 percentage point saving.
To work out whether the upgrade pays for itself, divide the extra subscription cost by the percentage point saved. 40 US Dollars divided by 1 percent works out to a break even point of roughly 4,000 US Dollars a month in sales processed through a third party gateway, approximately 1,320,000 LKR. Below that sales volume, Basic is cheaper overall. Above it, Grow starts saving money on transaction fees alone, before even factoring in the extra staff accounts and reporting that come with the upgrade.
Should You Upgrade From Grow to Advanced? The Actual Math
Upgrading from Grow to Advanced costs an extra 294 US Dollars a month on monthly billing, roughly 97,000 LKR, while the third party transaction fee only drops from 1 percent to 0.6 percent, a smaller 0.4 percentage point saving.
Using the same math, 294 US Dollars divided by 0.4 percent works out to a break even point of roughly 73,500 US Dollars a month in third party processed sales, approximately 24,255,000 LKR. This is a high bar for most Sri Lankan stores, which means the Advanced upgrade usually needs to be justified by its reporting, automation, or international features rather than transaction fee savings alone, unless a store is already operating at serious scale.
A Practical Example at 10,000 US Dollars in Monthly Sales
Consider a Sri Lankan store processing 10,000 US Dollars, roughly 3,300,000 LKR, in monthly online sales through a third party gateway. Comparing just the subscription and Shopify’s third party fee across plans on monthly billing, Basic totals 239 US Dollars, Grow totals 205 US Dollars, and Advanced totals 459 US Dollars.
At this sales level, Grow comes out lowest once the subscription and Shopify’s own transaction fee are combined, even though its subscription costs more than Basic. This example excludes the gateway’s own processing fee, apps, theme, and development costs, which still need to be added on top, but it illustrates why the cheapest looking plan on paper isn’t always the cheapest one in practice once sales grow.
The Full Cost Formula
A realistic monthly Shopify cost for a Sri Lankan store adds up as follows.
Shopify subscription + Shopify’s third party transaction fee + payment gateway’s own processing fee + app subscriptions + theme cost + ongoing maintenance and support
For a full first launch budget rather than just an ongoing monthly figure, also add theme or custom design work, store setup and configuration, product data migration, payment gateway integration, any courier or inventory integrations, and initial SEO setup.
Other Costs Sri Lankan Sellers Should Budget For
Beyond the plan and transaction fees, a handful of recurring and one time costs affect the real total.
Themes range from free to a few hundred US Dollars as a one time cost, though a serious brand often benefits from custom theme work that a free theme can’t deliver.
Apps for functions like size charts, reviews, email marketing, and shipping integrations typically carry their own monthly fees, and a small store commonly runs 3 to 5 paid apps, which can add anywhere from 15 to 80 US Dollars a month combined.
Domain costs, whether .com or .lk, carry a modest separate annual cost outside of Shopify’s own pricing.
Development and integration work, including custom design, product and customer data migration, courier and payment gateway integration, and technical SEO setup, varies widely depending on store complexity and is usually the largest one time cost in a proper launch.
Ongoing maintenance and optimization, including theme updates, conversion rate optimization, and SEO, should be budgeted as an ongoing cost rather than treated as a one time launch expense.
Which Plan Should You Choose
- Choose Basic when the store is new or still validating demand, the team is small, monthly online sales are modest, and advanced reporting or international features aren’t yet needed.
- Consider Grow once monthly third party processed sales are approaching or above the roughly 4,000 US Dollar break even point calculated earlier, or once the business needs more staff accounts and stronger reporting regardless of the fee math.
- Consider Advanced once a store is operating at serious scale, generally well above the Grow break even point, or when its specific automation and reporting features are needed regardless of transaction fee savings.
How Accel Asia Helps Sri Lankan Businesses Get This Right
Choosing the wrong plan or payment setup is one of the more expensive mistakes a new Sri Lankan Shopify seller can make, either overpaying for capacity that isn’t needed yet, or staying on Basic long after the Grow break even point has passed and quietly losing more to stacked transaction fees than the upgrade would have cost. AccelAsia is an official Shopify Partner, one of only 13 in Sri Lanka, and has been building and configuring Shopify stores, including plan selection, payment gateway setup, and the break even analysis above, since 2021.
Beyond the store itself, Accel Asia also handles the Marketing side needed to make a Shopify investment pay off, including PPC Ads across Google, Meta, and TikTok, SEO, and social media management, along with AI Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization, and Generative Engine Optimization to help a store get discovered through both traditional search and AI powered search tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much does Shopify cost per month in Sri Lanka?
- Shopify’s core plans cost 39 US Dollars a month for Basic, 105 US Dollars a month for Grow, and 399 US Dollars a month for Advanced, roughly 12,900 LKR, 34,700 LKR, and 131,700 LKR respectively at current exchange rates, before accounting for transaction fees, apps, or development costs.
2. Is Shopify Payments available in Sri Lanka?
- No. Shopify Payments is not available to merchants in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan sellers use third party gateways such as PayHere, WEBXPAY, or PayPal instead, and Shopify adds its own additional fee on top of these gateways, roughly 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, and 0.6 percent on Advanced.
3. When does it make sense to upgrade from Basic to Grow?
- Upgrading from Basic to Grow tends to pay for itself once a store processes roughly 4,000 US Dollars a month or more in sales through a third party gateway, since the 1 percentage point fee reduction offsets the higher subscription cost at that volume.
4. When does it make sense to upgrade from Grow to Advanced?
- The upgrade from Grow to Advanced only pays for itself through fee savings alone at a much higher volume, roughly 73,500 US Dollars a month in third party processed sales, so most Sri Lankan stores that upgrade to Advanced do so for its features and reporting rather than transaction fee savings.
5. Are there hidden costs beyond the Shopify plan fee?
- Yes. Beyond the monthly plan fee and transaction fees, most stores also pay for a theme, paid apps, a domain, and development or maintenance work, which together commonly add several thousand LKR a month for a small store and considerably more for a full custom build.
Final Thoughts
Shopify’s published plan prices are only the entry point for what a Sri Lankan business actually pays each month. Transaction fee stacking, app costs, and development work all shape the real number, and understanding the break even math between plans helps avoid both overpaying for unnecessary capacity and staying too long on a plan that’s quietly costing more in fees than the upgrade would.
